I just graduated with my MFA in Scenic design from University of Arkansas. I love theatre and scenic design, one of my favorite subjects to study is Shakespeare so when I saw this opportunity, I jumped on it! I have worked in theatre for Eight years now!
The Tempest
This design for the tempest was something I thought would be fun to try and tackle as well as a challenge to my skills as a scenic designer and a 3-D modeler. I set the production in the University Theatre at University of Arkansas because it is a space that I am familiar with and it is in the area which I felt appropriate. My goal with this design was to portray a skull island traditionally from various adventure movies and books. The setting is desolate because of the results of characters past actions. Prospero runs this island and he does so with a firm and angry hand due to his anger of being banished. He purposefully brings desolation to this island and this same force is what brings the new characters and the play to begin. I used a lot of wrecked elements of wood and stone to make up the scenery to help convey the wrecked nature of the island. I also included various plants growing up and through the various elements on the set like the skull or over the sea shack. This is because in this death there is the potential for life and prosperity. As the play goes on, we see people forgive each other and even some people fall in love, which would not have occurred if Prospero did not conjure up such a large storm and bring everyone together. I also used a mix beach and jungle plants for the various natural elements.
