My name is Andy Bruening. I am a Costume Crafts Artisan and Technician from the Midwest area. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theater And Dance at Southeast Missouri State University in Theater Design and Technology with an emphasis in Costume Technology. I graduate in the summer of 2020.

As an artist my favorite things are being stimulated by thinking abstractly. I love starting a project and trying to figure out the best means of replication. I love being challenged and I'm always looking to expand my knowledge and push myself for the betterment of the project.

Richard III

Designer Concept: A once pristine and beautiful rose garden reduced to ash and rubble.

This play signified the end of the war of the roses. I really wanted to play with the notion that all of the characters are either roses or the weeds and stems that are found in a rose garden. But this rose garden is destroyed, torn apart, and dying. Everyone who is a member of the house of York or Lancaster will have their respective house accent colors into their design. Each member has accents of dead and decaying roses. All supporting and background characters will be in earthy tones to represent the soil.

The second half of this entry will focus on a Medici Collar dated in the 1600s. This is the process and general silhouette and style I would use to create the collar I have designed for Margaret.  I am displaying this as a means to show my capability as both a designer and a technician.

For this project I did visual and technical research on the collar of how it was made back in the 1600's.

I started by hand basting over 3 yards of white lace and loose woven linen. There were 4 basting stitches done for the entire length to assure stability. From there I gathered an end and starched the collar. A frame was made from millinery wire and white gaff tape for structure and support. The top had a scalloped edge for decoration.

Once the collar was starched I hand tacked it to the frame. And then created a bias binding for connection of the collar and to create a closure so that it could be attached to the dress.

After that I created a backing of lace and linen that was eased into the back of the frame and hand stitched.
