Macbeth
When reading Macbeth, I am struck by the amount of powerful and sinister women who control the action. I wanted to create a set that reflects that control while also contributing to the fantastical aspects of the play. I decided to create a background of intersecting tulle that surrounds the stage to add a feminine touch— to show who’s really in charge —while also creating a web-like image to reflect the web of lies and violence this play is centered around.
I used the flags shown in the later drawings to show setting depending on whose palace we are in, red and white for Macbeth, green and white for Macduff, and the Scottish flag for Duncan/Malcom’s kingdom. I imagine other settings being represented by things like lighting, props, and perhaps some fog.
One of my favorite things about Macbeth is its timelessness and fantasy, so I wanted to create something abstract and whimsical to reflect that. This show has always held a special place in my heart, and it was such a joy to work on!
